From Bahia to the world: Caramurê is the new member of Brazilian Publishers
Caramurê, a publishing house dedicated to writers from Bahia, just started its internationalization journey by becoming a member of Brazilian Publishers – an industry project fostering the exports of Brazilian editorial content by means of a partnership between the Brazilian Book Chamber (CBL) and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil).
Operating for over 20 years, the company has captivated the national market with regional books by writers born in the State of Bahia, in the Northeast region of Brazil. Caramurê is renowned in the publishing market because of the quality of its books, such as art titles, for example. Today the company has 50 titles for sale in its catalog.
According to Fernando Oberlaender, plastic artist and founder of the publishing house, the new step in the company’s journey is to introduce Caramurê’s DNA into the global market. “As we grew stronger in the national market, we started planning to expand and dialog with other cultures. Today, our philosophy is to take Bahia to the world”, he says.
Fernando also explains that, aiming at captivating readers worldwide, the publishing house has bet on young writers who escape stereotypes. Breno Fernandes (Mendax – o ladrão de histórias [Mendax, the story thief]) and Saulo Dourado (Amar é uma conexão discada [Love is a dial-up connection]) are two of such writers. “Caramurê goes beyond typical. That’s why I mention Breno and Saulo, who use a local, regional and pop language”, he says.
To the artist, when people think about Bahia they always think about Carnival and Jorge Amado’s books. “We joined Brazilian Publishers to introduce the actual Bahia, the Bahia of today, to the world”, he completes.
Currently, 67 Brazilian publishing houses are members of Brazilian Publishers, which promotes the participation of professionals from the Brazilian publishing market in international events and their connection with professionals abroad.
