Brazilian Authors Series – Ana Martins Marques

Ana Martins Marques is native of the State of Minas Gerais, born in the city of Belo Horizonte, and started her writer career in 2009, with the publication of the book entitled “A Vida Submarina” (Submarine Life) (Editora Scriptum). However, she has always been a book lover: she is graduated in Languages from UFMG and has a doctoral degree in comparative literature from the same university. The writer is part of the Brazilian Authors Series, an initiative of Brazilian Publishers, an industry project fostering the exports of Brazilian editorial content by means of a partnership between the Brazilian Book Chamber (CBL) and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil).

“I started as a child. I believe, for me, reading and writing have been inseparable activities since the beginning. Many recollections I have of my childhood are linked with memories of books I have read, or, more specifically, with memories related to my reading experience. But it took a long time for me to decide to be published”, Ana said in an interview to O Tempo newspaper.

Ana’s first book was a collection of poems that had won the Belo Horizonte City Prize for Literature, in 2007 and 2008. “A Vida Submarina” is divided into seven parts, each with a different purpose and theme, but all of them having in common how people view themselves and life as something impossible.

The writer was also the winner of the National Library Literary Prize, in 2012, for her book “Da Arte das Armadilhas” (On the Art of Traps), and in 2016 she was one of the four winners of the Oceanos Awards for her poetry book entitled “O Livro das Semelhanças” (The Book of Similarities), which is divided into four parts dedicated to cartographies and analogies, always presenting a reflection on the daily routine. Other important works in Ana’s career are “Duas Janelas” (Two Windows) (Luna Parque Edições, 2016), written in a collaboration with Marcos Siscar, “Como se fosse a casa: uma correspondência” (As if it were the house: correspondence) (Relicário, 2017), a collaborative work with Eduardo Jorge, and “This House: Selected poems by Ana Martins Marques” (Scrambler Books, 2017), translated by Elisa Wouk Almino.

Despite of her great success and increasing popularity, Ana does not describe herself as a writer, but as a person who writes. She explained such view to the Ciência Hoje website: “I think it was Blanchot who said that, before sitting at his/her desk to write, the writer is not a writer yet and does not know if he/she could be a writer; and even after he/she had written, he/she will never know if he/she would be able to write again. In my case, soon after I finish writing a poem, I don’t know if I would be able to write again and frequently I don’t feel comfortable talking about what I have written. That’s why I feel funny giving an interview or talking about my books. But it does not prevent me from being fascinated about some writers, especially those who used to see themselves inevitably as writers and who had fought hard to be writers, such as Kafka, for example. It is quite disturbing how such writers had bet everything they own on a bunch of words disposed on a paper.”
