Brazilian Authors Series – Conceição Evaristo
Conceição Evaristo’s books addresses themes related to education, gender, and ethnic relations in the Brazilian society. So far, the writer has published novels, poems and literary essays of international reach. Among her works is “Ponciá Vicêncio” (Ponciá Vicencio) (2014), published in France and in the United States.
With a Master’s Degree in Brazilian Literature from PUC-RJ and a Doctoral Degree in Comparative Literature from Universidade Federal Fluminense, Conceição Evaristo is part of the Brazilian Authors Series, an initiative of Brazilian Publishers, an industry project fostering the exports of Brazilian editorial content by means of a partnership between the Brazilian Book Chamber (CBL) and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil).
The book “Ponciá Vicêncio” (2014) presents the protagonist’s paths, scars, dreams and disappointments. Conceição Evaristo describes the character’s trajectory from her childhood to the adult life and analyzes the affections, dissatisfactions and involvement of Ponciá with her family and friends. The story approaches the protagonist’s identity-related issues that are based on the cultural heritage and identity of her grandfather, and is also a dialog between past and present time, memories and experiences, reality and imagination.
The novel entitled “Becos da memória” (Memory alleys) was also translated to French. In this work, the writer addresses the human complexity and the deep feelings of people who face the abandonment, the prejudice, the hunger and the poverty everyday, and discusses important problems of the Brazilian society.
Other books by Conceição Evaristo are “Poemas da recordação e outros movimentos” (Poems of recollection and other movements) (2017), “Insubmissas lágrimas de mulheres” (Unsubmissive tears of women) (2011), “Olhos d’água” (Water eyes) (2014) and “Histórias de leves enganos e parecenças” (Stories of small mistakes and similarities) (2016).
