Brazilian publishers are getting ready to the Bologna Children’s Book Fair

Brazilian publishers have great expectations for the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, which is going to take place soon in Italy. Brazilian Publishers – an industry project fostering the exports of Brazilian editorial content by means of a partnership between the Brazilian Book Chamber (CBL) and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil) – will take to the event a team composed of 22 publishers, who promise to present appealing titles to the visitors of the fair.

Colorful and lively books – that is how Karine Pansa, Publisher at Girassol Brasil, defines the Brazilian editorial contents destined for children and young readers. “Our books draw the attention of readers and are well accepted because they are playful and deliver a message at the same time”, she points out. 

The Bologna Children’s Book Fair is held in that Italian city every year. It is deemed as the main meeting of the world’s greatest producers of contents for children and youngsters. The 2020 edition is scheduled for March 30th through April 2nd.

Girassol Brasil is one of the publishing houses that quickly submitted its entry form to participate in the fair. Other publishing companies composing the Brazilian delegation in Bologna are: Ciranda Cultural, FTD Educação, Callis Editora, Ôzé, Bom Bom Book’s, Editora Projeto, Jujuba Editora, DSOP, Guismofews, Ateliê da Escrita, Melhorpubli, Grupo Companhia das Letras, Carochinha, Editora do Brasil, Pallas Editora, On Line Editora, Faro Editorial, Boitatá, Editora Pulo do Gato, Mil Caraminholas and IMEPH.

In Karine’s opinion, publishing houses pursuing the internationalization of their titles should participate in fair. “Events like the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, which focuses on literature for kids and young readers, increase the chance of selling books destined for such audience”. 

On its turn, Editora do Brasil is a constant presence in the Italian book fair, and this year the publishing house will attend the event for the sixth time. “We have great expectations for the fair, since it is the world’s largest event for children’s and YA books. It is a place to get to know projects and meet publishers, writers and illustrators who are immerse in the universe of books for children and young readers 24/7. Because it is a reference event, participating in such fair is always a rich experience. We are expecting to learn interesting things and also meet with international publishers and strengthen the partnerships we have already established”, says Gilsandro Vieira Sales, Supervisor of Books for Children and Young Readers at Editora do Brasil.

With a bilingual catalog (English and Portuguese), Editora do Brasil is going to take to the fair almost 80 titles with rights available for negotiation. Gilsandro says that some books released in 2019 and 2020, such as “O homem sem alma” (The soulless man), by Nireuda Longobardi; “O livro maluco das poções mágicas” (The crazy book of magical potions), by Leo Cunha and Mariana Massarani; “Minha pasárgada” (My pasárgada), by Rosinha, “Tapete Vermelho” (Red carpet), by Ana Paula Bernardes, Tino Freitas and Sandra Jávera; and “A orelha vai à escola todos os dias” (The ear goes to school every day), by Rogério Andrade Barbosa and Marcelo Pimentel, will have a special spot in the stand. 

Additionally to such titles, Editora do Brasil is also betting on books that are expected to be released in 2020, including “The most recent title by acclaimed writer and illustrator Fernando Vilela and the debut book by writer Ana Matsusaki, who had her illustrations selected for the Ibero-American Illustration Catalog of the Guadalajara International Book Fair”, states Gilsandro.
