Brazilian writer Bianca Santana participates in the Buenos Aires International Book Fair
The next edition of the Buenos Aires International Book Fair will take place from April 25 to May 13 and count on the participation of writer Bianca Santana, who is going to be the moderator of roundtable “La lengua en la poesía: identidad y diversidad”, on May 5, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
The presence of the writer is supported by Brazilian Publishers, an industry project that promotes exports of Brazilian editorial content through a partnership between the Brazilian Book Chamber (CBL) and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil).
This will be the first time Bianca visits the Buenos Aires International Book Fair and she intends to deepen her knowledge about the Latin American literary market during the event. “I hope to increase the dialog with the Latin American literature during the discussion I will moderate, as well as the interaction with other activities at the fair”, states the writer. “Besides showing my own point of view, I’m going to ask questions to people during the roundtable discussion. Obviously, my perspective focuses on gender and race issues, and I’ll approach Latin American poetry to understand who writes poetry, who reads it, who is published or not, among other things”, she adds.
The most important work of the writer is “Quando Me Descobri Negra” (When I Found Myself Black) (2015) and consists of chronicles and stories about racism, gender and race issues. The book was translated into English and it will be published in Nigeria.
Her most recent project is the book entitled “Inovação Ancestral de Mulheres Negras: táticas e políticas do cotidiano” (Ancestral Innovation of Black Women: Everyday Life Tactics and Policies), which includes texts by 26 Brazilian black women and will be released in April 30. “We usually see black women as extremely excluded women, but we can’t see how much we are able to create and produce in situations of high inequality. So, the book gives voice to such women, allows them to tell their stories and show their own realities”, explains Bianca.
The writer is currently working on the project entitled “Vozes insurgentes das mulheres negras” (The Insurgent Voices of Black Women), a collection of classic texts by Brazilian black women who wrote in the Centuries 18-20. She is also working on the biography of Sueli Carneiro, a philosopher, writer and activist against racism that participated in the Brazilian black social movement. In 1988, Sueli founded Geledés – Instituto da Mulher Negra (Geledés – Institute of the Black Woman), one of the largest black feminism NGOs in Brazil.
In addition to Bianca, writer Ana Paula Maia will also be at the fair, participating in the discussion “La ficción literaria y audiovisual: encuentros y distancias”, which will happen on May 6, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
The Buenos Aires International Book Fair will have the participation of nine Brazilian publishing houses.
The fair will also count on the participation of nine Brazilian publishing houses during the event’s professional journey, which will take place on April 23-26. Click here for additional information.
