In september 2nd, Mauricio de Sousa Produções made official its partnership with the Brazilian National Olympic Committee for the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020. The agreement provides for the use of characters Monica (Mônica), Maggy (Magali), Jimmy Five (Cebolinha), Smudge (Cascão) and the entire gang in marketing activities by the Brazilian delegation during the games.
The publishing house of Mauricio de Sousa, the cartoonist and creator of the Monica and friends, is a member of Brazilian Publishers — an industry project fostering the exports of Brazilian editorial content by means of a partnership between the Brazilian Book Chamber (CBL) and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil).
According to the cartoonist, the proximity with athletes has been celebrated by everybody, including his characters. “We are the new supporters of the Brazilian team and we’ll be present in the Tokyo Olympic Games 2020. Our company in Japan will disclose among business partners the victory of the Brazilian Team athletes. We will be with children in both countries: Brazil and Japan”, he says.
The bond between Brazil and Japan is not new. In November 2018, Mauricio de Sousa announced the opening of an office in Japan, focusing on the Brazilian community in that country, the fifth largest Brazilian group of Brazilians living abroad totaling 186 thousand people. The company has already distributed in that country a commemorative edition of the comic book “Turma da Mônica – Brasil e Japão: 110 Anos de Amizade” (Monica’s Gang – Brazil and Japan: 110 Years of Friendship) and the title “A Turma da Mônica e a Escola no Japão” (Monica’s Gang and the School in Japan), both in Portuguese.
Besides the educational and commemorative content about the relations between the two countries, the publishing house also entered into an agreement with TezuComi, a local manga publisher.
Also, the producer already has Monica’s Gang licensed products showing the characters in Japan.
The Monica and friends has comic books, other products licensed in 40 countries, and has already magazines were translated into 14 languages. The brand has been expanded to other media over the years, in products such as books, toys, discs, CD-ROMs, videogames, among others.
