Mailson Furtado, winner of the Jabuti Awards 2018, is given an homage at the Brasília Book Fair

In its 35th edition, FeliB (Brasília Book Fair) decided to give more visibility to literary celebrities and librarians by giving the audience an opportunity to be in close contact with major national and international names and selecting a very special team of guest of honors, including Mailson Furtado, writer of “À Cidade” (To the City), who will receive an homage in the Brazilian Writer category.

The poet from Ceará touched the audience in 2018, when he was given the Jabuti Awards of Book of the Year and Poetry for his fourth work. “À Cidade” was the first independent book to win such prize. It tells the story of the writer and his generations interwoven with the existence of migrant people for over three centuries in a city in the back lands that is built, destroyed, reorganized, created and recreated.

In an interview to the website of Brazilian Publishers – an industry project fostering exports of Brazilian editorial content through a partnership between the Brazilian Book Chamber (CBL) and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil) –, Mailson said the following: “When I started writing poems, it was something visceral, an experience different from anything else I have ever felt before. I still feel that way”. When he went to the stage to receive the Jabuti Award, the poet proudly mentioned Varjota, the city of Ceará where he lives and which served as an inspiration for him to create his book, which had its content and also the cover made by Mailson.

Focusing on local writers, the fair organizers included in the program Ryan Maia, the 7-year-old poet from Brasília; João Doederlein, known as “Aka Poeta” and a revelation in the Federal District; and Maria da Conceição Moreira Salles (in memoriam) as the great honored personality. The librarian from Minas Gerais applied, in 1983, to the Brasília Demonstration Library (BDB), the concept of “living libraries” and used to promote cultural events, book clubs, tutoring classes, talks and music events in that place.

FeliB is open until June 16th and includes several attractions, such as roundtables and talks, speeches, show-classes, talk shows, pocket shows and spaces dedicated for kids programs.
