Publisher from Companhia das Letras is chosen for the Istanbul International Literary Festival fellowship program

The Istanbul International Literary Festival fellowship program will take place on April 17-20 and include the participation of 13 professionals from the publishing industry of countries such as the United States, Italy, the United Kingdom, Serbia, Hungary and Romania. Among them is the Brazilian publisher Luara França, from Companhia das Letras, a company that is part of Brazilian Publishers, an industry project that promotes exports of Brazilian editorial content through a partnership between the Brazilian Book Chamber (CBL) and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil).

During the festival, the chosen professionals will participate in meetings with publishers and writers from Turkey and in networking sessions. “I hope to talk about the publishing industry worldwide during the meetings and to get to know better the Turkish market. Like us, they are also facing a serious bookshop crisis, and I think it would be interesting to see how two countries so far from each other deal with similar difficulties”, says Luara.

For the 2019 edition, the fellowship program had over 100 applications from 20 countries. “Besides getting into a deeper contact with the Turkish market, participating in this program is important in order to show the Brazilian literary work to the other fellows and to be informed on what has been produced in literature in other countries”, she explains.

According to Luara, there is room for Brazilian literature in the Turkish market. “I believe the world is eager to read books that were not originally written in English, so it could benefit a lot the way the Brazilian literature is seen”, she says.

As the publisher of imprints Companhia das Letras, Penguin and Alfaguara, Luara became responsible for the work of Turkish writer Orham Pamuk eight months ago and she is currently working on one book that has not been published yet. “It is always a pleasure to work with an author so well liked as Pamuk. The most interesting part in working with acclaimed writers is to see how their writing changes throughout their life stages, and how each stage can have its special moment”, she adds.
