The 25th edition of the São Paulo International Book Fair begins this Friday (3rd) with more than 1,500 hours of literary programming, professional days among publishers of the national and international literary market, and the participation of the Emirate of Sharjah, elected “Cultural Capital of the Arab World 2014” and “World Book Capital in 2019” by UNESCO. This is the first time that a city from the Middle East participates in the São Paulo International Book Fair, bringing all its cultural richness with activities of music, dance, gastronomy and literature of the region. During the event more than 40 books translated from Arab into Portuguese will be presented for the first time.

Organized by the Brazilian Book Chamber (CBL), the event happens from August 3rd to 12th, at Anhembi, with the support of Brazilian Publishers, a project to foster exports of Brazilian editorial content through a partnership between the CBL and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil).

The participation of the city-state in the São Paulo International Book Fair also includes poetry reading sessions with Arab authors, discussions on the publishing market, and traditional music shows, as well as workshops for the decoration of masks and the manufacture of traditional baskets of the Emirates conducted by the Contemporary Crafts Council, Irthi.

Ahmed Al Ameri, chairman of the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA), entity that oversees the participation in the São Paulo International Fair, says: “This initiative is a reflex of the vision and efforts of Your Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, to establish strong cultural ties with communities around the world through continuous interaction and exchanges”. And adds: “For this, we will conduct several discussions with our counterparts in Brazil and leverage our presence in one of the most vibrant literary centers in Latin America, as well as explore ways to boost the publication of translations in Arab and in Portuguese. Brazil has a large population of Arab descent and our presence will strengthen even more the partnership between the two countries,” he said.

The Emirate will also introduce literary projects, such as “Knowledge Without Borders”, an initiative to encourage reading that has already resulted in the distribution of books for more than 42,000 families.

To Luís Antonio Torelli, president of the Brazilian Book Chamber (CBL), the international guest will bring a special glow to the event and will surely enchant the audience of more than 600 thousand visitors who attend the São Paulo International Book Fair. “It will be an unprecedented opportunity for young people, children, adults, educational and book professionals to get in contact with this rich culture. The goal is to bring our authors and readers together, to strengthen the relationship between our publishing markets”, he says.
