Illustrator André Dahmer is the guest of this week in the Brazilian Authors Series, an initiative of Brazilian Publishers — an industry project fostering the exports of Brazilian editorial content by means of a partnership between the Brazilian Book Chamber (CBL) and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil).
Dahmer is widely known especially for his comic strips of the Malvados (The evil ones) series, which usually includes stories that don’t have a chronological order and have two indefinite creatures referred to as “As flores do mal” (The flowers of evil) as their main characters. The politically incorrect style of such work captivated readers and made of the cartoon artist a big hit on the Internet.
Besides Malvados, André also created the character Emir Saad, the series Apóstolos (Apostles), Cidade do medo (City of Fear) and Quadrinhos dos Anos 10 (Comics from the 10s). His works have appeared on important Brazilian newspapers such as Jornal do Brasil, O Globo, Folha de S. Paulo and others.
Among his books are titles such as Malvados (2005, Editora Desiderata), A Cabeça é a Ilha (The head is the island) (2009, Editora Flâneur), Ninguém Muda Ninguém (Nobody can change others) (2011, Editora Barba Negra), and A Coragem do Primeiro Pássaro (The courage of the first bird) (2015, Editora Companhia das Letras), among others.
In 2017, Dahmer won in the category Comics the Jabuti Award, a prize conferred by the Brazilian Book Chamber. The award-winning book was Quadrinhos dos Anos 10 (2016, Editora Quadrinhos na Cia). Also, the artist has already won four HQmix trophies, a prize that is deemed as the “Brazilian Comics Oscar”.
