Adman Leonardo Chalub, winner of the Jabuti Awards 2020 in the Teen category, is the guest of this week in the Brazilian Authors Series, which an initiative of Brazilian Publishers — an industry project fostering the exports of Brazilian editorial content by means of a partnership between the Brazilian Book Chamber (CBL) and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil).
Published in 2019 by Editora Nemo, which belongs to the Autêntica Group, “Palmares de Zumbi” (Palmares, land of Zumbi) is Leonardo’s first book. It portrays the Brazil of 1667 and presents a new version of the story of one of the most important Brazilian black heroes. The work stands out because of its appealing writing and the xylographs by Luís Matuto.
The story of the quilombo starts with capoeira, a martial art the author practices since his childhood and that inspired him. “‘Palmares de Zumbi’ is a book I wrote from the perspective of a capoeira enthusiast to tell Brazilian people what we don’t see in the capoeira circles”, says Chalub.
When Leonardo wrote the story, he had the YA audience in mind. Because he managed to present all the themes in a ludic way, it ended up being classified as a Teen Book, and Leonardo won a Jabuti Award for it. “It’s a dream come true. Telling important and touching stories is my passion. The award shows that I am aligned with the current concerns of society”, he adds.
His second book is being prepared. It will address the story of Dandara, from the times of the formation of the Palmares Female Group, and its launch is expected for 2021. Graduated in Film Studies and Advertising from Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Chalub works as an audiovisual technician at the Engineering School of UFMG.
