Illustrator and comic book artist Wagner Willian Menezes de Araújo, author of “Silvestre” (Wild), winner of the Jabuti Awards 2020, is the guest of this week in the Brazilian Authors Series, which an initiative of Brazilian Publishers — an industry project fostering the exports of Brazilian editorial content by means of a partnership between the Brazilian Book Chamber (CBL) and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil).
The book for which Araújo won the Jabuti Award in the Comic Book category was published in 2019 by DarkSide Books. “Silvestre” is an amazing visual journey that takes readers to a forest in a story that combines Brazilian folklore, tales and mysticism.
Other works by Araújo were also acclaimed in other occasions and won important prizes. That’s the case of “Bulldogma”, published by Editora Veneta, in 2016. It was deemed as one of the greatest comic books created by a Brazilian artist. It took almost two years for Wagner Willian to produce the 320 pages of the book, which explores several genres in the story of Deisy Mantovani, a character facing a 30-something life crisis. For such graphic novel the illustrator won the HQMIX Award, the most important comic book prize in Brazil, in the category New Artist. He also was first place in the Grampo Awards for the same title.
Other works by Araújo are: “Lobisomem Sem Barba” (Werewolf without a beard) (Balão Editorial, 2014), second place in the Illustration category of the Jabuti Awards 2015; “Flerte da Mulher Barbada” (The flirtatious bearded woman) (Veneta, 2016); “O Martírio de Joana Dark Side” (The torments of Joana Dark Side) (Texugo, 2018); and “O Maestro, o Cuco e a Lenda” (The conductor, the cuckoo and the legend) (Editora Texugo, 2017) – the title was also published in Portugal by Polvo (2018) and in France by Casterman (2018).
Wagner was born in Natal in 1978. Besides having his books published, he also had his works displayed in collective and individual exhibitions, including “Silvestre” (Wild), hosted at Centro Cultural São Paulo in 2019; “Antes da Razão” (Before Reason), at Espaço Cultural Vallourec, in Belo Horizonte in 2015; and “Saravá Bangs”, at Galeria Vertente, in Campinas in 2011.
