Guadalajara International Book Fair 2023 will feature the participation of 14 publishers and nine Brazilian authors

21/11/2023

This year’s edition of the Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL) will take place from November 25 to December 3, with Brazil’s participation once again organized and promoted by Brazilian Publishers — a partnership between the Brazilian Book Chamber (CBL) and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (ApexBrasil).

Brazilian authors Amara Moira, Antônio Xerxenesky, Guiomar de Grammont, Itamar Vieira Junior, Jeferson Tenório, Kátia Bandeira de Mello Gerlach, Luiza Romão, Maria Alzira Brum Lemos, and Morgana Kretzmann have confirmed their attendance in “Destinação Brasil”. The program, promoted by the Brazilian Embassy in Mexico, focuses on promoting Brazilian literature in the global publishing market and has had the participation of over 80 renowned Brazilian authors over its 11 years of existence.

In addition to the nine authors’ attendance, Brazilian Publishers will also host the exclusive Brazil stand, which will welcome representatives from 14 Brazilian publishers. They are: Árvore, Biblioteca do Exército, Bom Bom Books, Callis, Carochinha, Edições SESC, Editora do Brasil, Girassol, Global Editora, Livraria Internacional SBS, Mil Caramiolas, Ôzé Editora, Panda Books and Todolivro.

The space will also feature a vast program of events that promise to capture the attention of publishers and professionals at the fair, highlighting Brazilian literature. On the 27th, at 10 a.m., there will be a matchmaking session accompanied by a breakfast with UK publishers. On the 29th, at 2 p.m., it will be the turn of Colombian publishers to participate in a matchmaking session at the Brazil stand, followed at 4:30 p.m. by the Caipirinha Hour, a traditional event that gathers hundreds of publishing professionals for a moment of relaxation and networking.

“Brazil’s participation on this literary stage is crucial for strengthening ties between nations and highlighting the richness and variety of our literary production,” says Sevani Matos, president of CBL. “In addition to providing visibility to our authors and works, Brazil’s attendance at the fair also contributes to the exchange of ideas, cultural enrichment, and the promotion of the Portuguese language on the international landscape,” she adds.

Rayanna Pereira, Brazilian Publishers’ coordinator, emphasizes that the Guadalajara Book Fair is a privileged space to celebrate Brazilian literature. According to her, an example is the opportunity to promote the Spanish version of the program’s Books and Rights Catalogue. The material, available online for free, brings together hundreds of Brazilian works with copyrights available for the international market.
