Professional Days is expected to generate USD 250 thousand in deals for publishers

From December 7th through 11th, the 1st Online Edition of the São Paulo Book Fair hosted the 2nd edition of Professional Days. The international business rounds initiative involving publishing houses from Brazil and abroad was promoted by Brazilian Publishers, an industry project fostering exports of Brazilian editorial content through a partnership between the Brazilian Book Chamber (CBL) and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil).

The 19 publishers participating in the initiative expect to reach USD 250 thousand in sales of book rights in the next twelve months. The deals result from 114 meetings held involving 30 international publishing houses from Mexico, Colombia, Peru, United Arab Emirates, Argentina, Spain, Turkey, Paraguay, United States of America, Egypt, Chile, Slovakia, France and Taiwan, which took part in the matchmaking sessions. Fernanda Dantas, International Affairs Manager of CBL and Executive Manager of Brazilian Publishers, says Professional Days is a great opportunity for publishers, especially in such a delicate moment.

“This is one of our main strategies to promote exports. We are very happy of being able to make it happen in such an atypical year and in a very accessible way. This project is extremely important, especially in an event like the São Paulo Book Fair, and it will bring valuable opportunities for Brazilian publishers and authors”, says Fernanda.

A few days before Professional Days, in the end of November, Brazilian Publishers also promoted a series of three preparatory workshops for the Brazilian publishing houses that are members of the BP program. The sessions were given by Luciana Mazzuti Leal, an expert operating for more than 18 years in the field of international logistics and foreign trade. The initiative helped Brazilian publishers to understand where publishing houses fit in the online world and how to approach buyers, among other things.

This year, in addition to the business rounds, Professional Days also promoted the discussion of themes relevant to the industry in three lives. Transmissions happened in December 7th, 9th and 11th in the “Papo de Mercado” (Market Talk) area.

The first discussed digital transformation and the challenges for the publishing industry after the pandemic, and addressed the acceleration of the digitalization of the industry. The second live, held in December 9th, talked about the UN Sustainable Development Goals Book Club and had Vitor Tavares, president of CBL, as one of the members composing the table. Finally, the third live was a talk about digital influencers and their role in the publishing industry.
