Professional Days prospects USD 650 thousand in business with books and rights sales to the international market

Between June 29th and July 2nd, 2022, the Professional Days of the 26th São Paulo International Book Fair took place. The third edition of the initiative promoted by Brazilian Publishers — a partnership between the Brazilian Book Chamber (CBL) and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (ApexBrasil) — generated the sale of USD 104,550 thousand in royalties, USD 119,100 thousand in books, and an estimated USD 432,500 thousand in business for the next 12 months. In total, the event estimates more than USD 650 thousand, adding up immediate business and expectations for the following months. In addition, the program also provided excellent networking, establishing almost 500 new contacts for the publishers at the event.

This year, the initiative was, like the fair, in person. The program, in addition to organizing the visit of representatives of 20 foreign publishers to Brazil for matchmaking sessions, also promoted discussion tables about the publishing market. A group of 46 Brazilian publishers participated in the program, which mixed business and content in four days of intense exchange.

Fernanda Dantas, international relations manager at CBL and Brazilian Publishers’ manager, is extremely proud of the initiative’s performance: “The Professional Days brought many agreements and good business opportunities to the participating publishers. The program brought the relationships between professionals in the global publishing market even closer and made a rich networking for Brazilian houses possible”, she quotes with satisfaction.

Fernanda also explains that the results of the initiative exceeded expectations. “In 2020, the year in which the Professional Days took place 100% online, we had the participation of 19 publishers, and the results were USD 133 thousand in business. We had in mind that we would bring better results, around USD 400 thousand, but surely reaching USD 650 thousand is a great achievement”, explains the executive manager.

Vitor Tavares, president of CBL, also couldn’t be happier with the results of the initiative: “This edition brought us excellent results and further rekindled the resumption of face-to-face events and business. We also had the honor of receiving ten Portuguese publishers, guest country of honor at the São Paulo Book Fair, which made it possible for Brazil and Portugal to become even closer”, he concludes.

The Professional Days

The 2022 edition of the program selected an interesting mix of guests, including editors such as Ricardo Sánchez-Riancho, from Mexico’s Textofilia Ediciones, which already publishes Brazilian works, to a journalist. Leonard Porter Anderson III provided unprecedented coverage of the event for the North American vehicle Publishing Perspectives. The event’s schedule also included several round tables, business roundtables and a technical visit to FTD Educação and the publishing house’s printing facilities. Highlight for the keynote by the President of the International Publishers Association (IPA), Boudor Al Qasimi, who spoke about the International Sustainable Publishing and Industry Resilience Plan (InSPIRe), an IPA initiative to improve cooperation across the publishing spectrum, from publishers, booksellers and libraries, to teachers, technology companies, regulators and everyone in between.
