São Paulo Book Fair, the largest event for the publishing industry in Brazil, is postponed

The 26th São Paulo Book Fair, the most important event for the publishing industry in Brazil, was officially postponed last Friday (19). The fair, which had its first edition in 1970, takes place every two years in the city of São Paulo and brings together Brazilian and foreign publishers, as well as literature fans. Over 4 thousand people per day were expected for the 2020 edition. Upon the postponement of the face-to-face event, the Professional Days initiative, which was part of the program of the fair, will happen in a digital environment.

Professional Days is a matchmaking event involving Brazilian and international publishing houses promoted by Brazilian Publisher – an industry project fostering exports of Brazilian editorial content through a partnership between the Brazilian Book Chamber (CBL) and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil). In the latest edition, in 2018, the business rounds had the participation of 58 domestic and foreign publishers, which generated USD 735,900.00 in prospective deals. This year, the rounds will happen for the second time, but now via the Brazilian Publishers application.

In its official note, CBL informed that the São Paulo Book Fair was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic, aiming at “guaranteeing the health and safety of visitors, writers, exhibitors, partners and other participants. This is our main concern during this crisis”.

According to Vitor Tavares, CEO of CBL, “the purpose of the postponement is to ensure visitors and publishers have a safe and carefully developed environment when they come to the physical place of the event”. Tavares emphasizes that “in 2022, we’ll offer new ways of interaction for readers, writers and exhibitors, so that they can have a better experience.”

Fernanda Dantas, Executive Manager of Brazilian Publishers, adds: “All events of this size have been making the same decision, so it was not unexpected. Our application was launched last May, so I believe that was our way to be prepared for the continuation of the business rounds, now via a digital medium”.

This year, all matchmaking actions organized by Brazilian Publisher will happen via the BP application. The app also provides information about the Brazilian publishing industry and access to the publishing market internationalization guide, registration for international events and notification of exclusive activities. Supported companies also have access to an area destined for virtual meeting scheduling. Click here for more information.

São Paulo Book Fair will happen again in 2022.
