After being translated into English, the award-winning novel by Brazilian writer Jeferson Tenório, “The Dark Side of Skin”, has been published in Sweden by Tranan. Addressing themes such as racism, prejudice, and social issues, the book tells the story of Pedro, who, after the death of his father, murdered in a disastrous police approach, sets out to recover his family’s past and retrace his father’s footsteps. In 2021, the work won Brazil’s most prestigious literary prize, the Jabuti Award, in the Literary Novel category.

Jeferson Tenório is a Brazilian writer, professor, and researcher currently residing in Porto Alegre. Renowned for his impactful literary works, Tenório’s debut novel, “O Beijo na Parede” (The Kiss on the Wall, 2013), was honored as the Book of the Year by the Gaúcha Writers Association. His decision to delve into writing originated from personal encounters with violent police interventions, aiming to confront racism prevalent in the Southern region and across Brazil.

Tranan made its entry into the publishing world in 1992 and has since launched over 300 foreign literature titles, translated into Swedish from more than 35 languages. Committed to expanding the Swedish publishing market and fostering linguistic and geographical diversity, the publisher focuses on regions often overlooked by other Swedish publishing houses, including Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe.

The list of distinguished authors published by Tranan in Swedish includes names such as Chinua Achebe, Jorge Luis Borges, Clarice Lispector, Roberto Bolaño, Thomas Bernhard, Federico García Lorca, Jamaica Kincaid, Kamel Daoud, Salim Barakat, Viet Thanh Nguyen, and others. A notable feature is the series of short story anthologies called “Berättarserien” (The Story Series), showcasing authors from 25 countries like Cambodia, Egypt, and Brazil, providing Swedish readers access to a diverse array of literary talents.
