During the event, the author will present the seminar “How To Deal With Being Brazilian – Some brief thoughts on sense of place, representation and the stories I can tell” on March 14th, from 1:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the English PEN Salon. “I will address some matters on which I constantly think about and that are linked to the national identity, representation of Brazil and the stories that I can and do want to tell in my books”, explains Carol.
This is the first time the writer participates in the London Book Fair. “The presence of a writer adds institutional and editorial export efforts. It is an invitation to get to know more about what is produced in Brazil and a good way of showing how the literature of our country can be diverse”, she said.
Last year, Carol was awarded the Jabuti Award in the Romance category for the publication of “O clube dos jardineiros de fumaça” (The Club of Smoke Gardeners) (2017), which addresses marijuana decriminalization. Organized by the Brazilian Book Chamber, this is the major and most expressive recognition of the Brazilian publishing market.
The narrative of the work presents the character Arthur, who is fired from the university where he works for growing marijuana to aid in the medical treatment of his mother, who has cancer. After her death, the protagonist moves to Northern California on the pretext of pursuing a doctorate, but ends up getting involved in planting and dealing with the illegal drug. Crossing history and fiction, Carol presents a portrait of the hippie generation and its legacy.
Another outstanding book in the author’s career is “Sinuca Embaixo D’água” (Snooker Under Water) (2009), which is scheduled to be published in Italy in May 2019 with the Tunue label. The protagonist of the novel appears in the story through the eyes of seven other characters who witnessed her death and were forever connected due to what happened.
During her career, Carol also published “Pó de parede” (Dust of Wall) (2008), “Todos nós adorávamos caubóis” (We All Loved Cowboys) (2013) and “Uma Estranha Na Cidade” (A Stranger in the City) (2015). The author has books published in Italy, Argentina, Germany and the United States.
