The hard daily struggle of a black family, in the first decades of the last century, narrated from the point of view of an intelligent and interested girl. Bitita´s diary documents her efforts to find work, even as a child, to ensure material survival, and to maintain dignity above all. A panel of Brazilian agrarian society, highlighted with stains of social injustice, prejudice and discrimination.

The author, Carolina Maria de Jesus, was the protagonist of an editorial phenomenon in the country in the 1960s. Her first book, Quarto de Despejo (Room of Eviction), became best seller, selling 80,000 copies in Brazil alone, and had its translation rights sold for 13 languages. Her readers from outside Brazil keep alive her memory. The English translation of the first book is still adopted today in American schools. The first edition of Bitita´s diary was published posthumously in 1982 in France.
